Confusion Reigns for Anthony Green

A holdover recruit from the Dan McCarney era plans to visit Ames this weekend, with the intention of still enrolling at Iowa State next fall.

Anthony Green, a 6-foot-0, 220-pound outside linebacker from Missouri City (Tex.), will make a visit to Ames this coming weekend. Green committed to former Iowa State assistant Shawn Simms in May 2006 over interest from Michigan State, Mississippi State and UTEP.

According to Green, the two big reasons why he committed to Iowa State are still as true under Gene Chizik's rule as they were under Dan McCarney's leadership.

"I've always wanted to play in the Big 12, it's just a real good conference," Green said Tuesday. "And the athletic department there graduates a real high number of their athletes, and that's real important to my parents, that my academics are stable."

Green said that after McCarney's departure, the only coach he heard from was Barney Cotton, who began calling regularly and even visited him in Texas to assure him that Iowa State was still a good choice for his college commitment. His communication with Cotton has been the only contact Green has had with coaches at Iowa State, other than an exchange of Christmas text messages with Simms on December 25.

According to Green, he does not have a standing appointment with the Chizik staff this weekend, but he was assured by Cotton that the new coaching staff would meet with him and address his questions.

Whether Chizik will make the same scholarship offer extended by McCarney's staff is unclear at this time.

Despite sitting out three games, Green's play at LB earned him first team all-district honors in the Houston area.
